What type of window coverings are considered waterproof?
Blinds made of PVC, vinyl, or aluminum are generally considered waterproof. This includes faux wood blinds, vinyl blinds, solar shades, faux wood shutters, and more. Most woven wood shades or fabric roman shades, curtains, and drapery are not considered waterproof, but can be outfitted with water repellent liners to give some resistance.
What should I watch out for when choosing a waterproof blind?
It's important to note that some window treatments may also have components that are not waterproof. Window blinds held together by a cord ladder may deteriorate over time if directly exposed to water. So while faux wood blinds are great for a kitchen window, they might not hold up in a shower or in small bathrooms where they are splashed on constantly. Real wood and woven wood shades are not waterproof and can become damaged by moisture.
What blinds should you use in a shower?
For bathtub, shower, and other bathroom windows, consider using a blind or shade that is primarily made of a waterproof material. For example, vinyl roller shades don't have cord ladders like normal blinds, and so can withstand direct contact with water. They can even be made in a cordless blind style to have no cords at all. PVC shutters are also great window treatments for an area that sees constant humidity. No matter which bathroom window treatment you go for, you should ensure that the area is properly ventilated and is allowed to dry out over time.
Even among waterproof blinds, you can choose from a number of distinct styles, textures, and fabrics - so don't feel restricted! Make sure you are still getting the right light control and privacy you need for your windows.
