What's the difference between roller shades and solar shades?

The main difference between solar shades and roller shades is the material used. Roller shades are not see through, and have materials that are light filtering or blackout. Light filtering roller shades block direct sunlight, but let in more light than blackout roller shades. Blackout roller shades, on the other hand, will block 100% of the light through the material itself, making them excellent window coverings for reducing harmful UV rays and adding UV protection, while providing the light control needed for media rooms.

On the other hand, solar shades, also known as sun shades or solar blinds, have small holes in the material that allows you a clearer view through. This makes them a great option as solar screens for a backyard or for windows where you want to keep your beautiful view. Solar shades have an openness factor that ranges from 1% to 15% or more, which describes how much you can see through. A higher percentage allows a clearer view through, while a lower percentage is better to reduce heat and light.

Which roller shade is best for me?

Before you choose your window coverings, you should determine the needs of your room. Choose a type of fabric that would best fit your needs, or go for motorized dual roller shades which combine two fabrics in one.

Blackout Roller Shades

Are you trying to block out light in your bedroom because of bright lights or the harsh sun? Do you want to improve your home's energy efficiency and reduce energy costs? Then you should get blackout roller shades with side channels, which provide the best light control, help reduce light gaps, and are energy efficient. They are also great privacy shades.

Light Filtering Roller Shades

Are you looking for something to help reduce UV rays and protect your furniture? Do you need a waterproof solution such as waterproof blinds? Do you want a shade that brings in a bit more light while still providing privacy? In that case, a light filtering roller shade will make a great finishing touch for living rooms and large windows. These shades help reduce glare from the sun while still keeping your room light and airy. They are a great way to get more sunlight and provide UV protection to your space.

Solar Shades

Do you want something that helps in reducing glare, provides some light control, but more importantly preserves your beautiful view? Then you should look at getting window treatments with a see-through fabric such as solar shades. Solar shades help reduce the harshness of the sun's rays while allowing you to see through your windows. Solar shades are great for rooms where you value seeing through your window and do not necessarily need complete privacy.

Child Safety

For roller shades and solar shades that are child and pet safe, opt for window treatments with a cordless option instead of a cord loop. A cord loop can pose as a hazard risk in the home, as young children can play and become entangled in them. We have many roller and solar shades available with cordless options and even remote control options, which eliminate hazardous lift cords. If you do use roller shades or solar shades with lift cords, ensure that they are secured inside the window casing with a chain tensioner.
