Velvet Curtains add beauty to your home . They are ideal for bedrooms and libraries as they absorb a maximum amount of sunlight thereby prevent excess light from entering. Velvet curtains indeed give your room a luxurious look, but at the same time, they need the utmost care. To keep your velvet curtains look beautiful and long-lasting, you have to put in the extra effort.
Most people think that being thick velvet can’t be wrinkled easily. But due to the presence of multiple fabric layers, velvet curtains are difficult to maintain and often get wrinkles that adversely affect their beauty. These wrinkles or creases are hard to ignore and can get everyone’s attention. Even a small wrinkle can ruin the look and beauty of the entire curtain.
Unlike other curtains material, velvet curtains need special attention. To get unwanted wrinkles out of the curtain fabric, care must be taken thoroughly. But for that, you can’t apply direct heat to the velvet fabric. You need to be patient and need some time to overcome the issue.
Never use regular ironing methods to remove wrinkles as they may damage the natural texture and beauty of the fabric. A mild steaming will serve the purpose. You can either use a portable steamer or iron steamer to remove wrinkles from your velvet curtains.

The very first step towards unwrinkling your velvet curtains is to read the care instructions label on the velvet curtain. Ensure whether you can use steam or not. Also, read that what kind of chemicals you can use and which ones should be avoided while removing wrinkles or creases.
Removing Wrinkles with A Portable Steamer
Start with hanging your curtain on a hanger. Then set the steamer on the lowest heat. Starting from the bottom, run the steamer over the curtain without touching it towards the upper side. While doing this, gently pull the lower end of your curtain slightly with your hand to get the desired results. Repeat the same procedure until you have done with the entire curtain. Once done, move your hand all over the curtain to smooth the wrinkles.

Note: Always take care while using the steamer and start from the bottom of the fabric as the tendency of the steam is to rise. So starting from the bottom will help the steam to penetrate more effectively into the dense velvet fabric of the curtain and you will get the desired results.
Removing Wrinkles with An Iron Steamer
Hang your velvet curtain on a hanger. Set your iron at a temperature point where it starts producing the steam. Now hold the iron at a slight distance from your velvet curtain and start moving the iron over the curtain without touching it. This will aid in removing the wrinkles out from the curtain. Repeat the same procedure again and again until you had finished steaming the whole curtain.
Caution: Don’t hold steam iron or steamer too close to the velvet or silk fabrics. Avoid direct contact between the surface of the steamer or steam iron and the fabric. Also, don’t apply pressure to the velvet curtain as even a little pressure can harm the pile and embossing. Always follow the temperature range as indicated on the label provided with the fabric.
Besides the above two methods, you can remove wrinkles from your velvet curtains by steaming them in the bathroom. Hand down the curtain on the shower rod or at the back of your bathroom door. Close the door and fill the bathtub with hot water. Let the door remain closed for about 30 minutes so that the steam produced from the hot water will remove all the wrinkles from the curtain.
You can also unwrinkle your velvet curtains by using a needle board. Needle board consists of a board that has small stainless steel pins on it at a slight distance from each other. These pins get burrowed into the velvet curtain thus preventing it from getting wrinkled while ironing. Follow the following steps to remove wrinkles:
- Place and arrange the velvet curtain on the pins of the needle board.
- Spray some wrinkle release spray all over the curtain by holding it an inch distance away from the curtain.
- Move the steamer over the curtain from one side to the other of the needle board.
- Now change the position of the curtain on the needle board and repeat the same procedure until you have done with the whole velvet curtain.
One can effectively remove wrinkles and creases from your velvet curtains and restore their originality by any of the above methods. But always keep in mind that velvet fabric whether it is a curtain, bed sheet or any other dress, shouldn’t be ironed. Steaming is the best way to wrinkle your velvet curtains. Steam will not interfere with the texture and beauty of your velvet curtains thus helps in regaining and maintaining the embossing and original fabric of the curtains.
