How To Decorate Your Porch for Summer

Ideas for decorating your porch.

During the warm, beautiful days of summer, you want to spend as much time as possible on your porch, patio, deck, balcony or terrace. The sun graces us with its warm rays, the air is breezy and comfortable, and you want to take it all in. But if your outdoor space is in need of upgrades due to aging and weathering, or you just want to make changes to beautify the space, the time to do so is now.

How do you approach such a project? Well, the answer lies in a few factors. First, how big is the space you want to decorate, and what type of space is it? Is it a small balcony in an apartment? or is it a large patio space in your backyard? Second, how much are you willing to spend? Can you make major changes with a large budget? or do you simply want to make a few cosmetic changes and spend less? Lastly, what is your decor style? Everyone has different tastes and preferences so redecorating your outdoor space should reflect that.

For us, we want to share some of our more common and relatively inexpensive summer porch decor ideas with you. They range from rearranging your seating areas, adding new potted flowers, to adding new outdoor window treatments. All of these can help transform your outdoor space and give you a place to fully enjoy the incoming summer days ahead.

Cater to You

Do you have a green thumb? Do you like having people over for parties and barbeques? Do you like a place to kick back and relax while reading a book? Ask yourself questions like these before deciding on redesigning your outdoor space. Upgrading or repurposing the space to cater to you should be your priority when undertaking this decorating project.

As an example, if you are the type of person who likes to have people over for barbecues, then you know you have to be able to accommodate all your guests. So your porch designs or redesigns need to plan for items like a dining set, added folding chairs and lawn chairs, a large table mounted umbrella if you don’t already have an awning and accessories like outdoor throw pillows. Always plan for the type of space you want to have and on the type of personality you possess.

Manage your Space

One thing you should be very mindful of is the type of space you have, and its size. For example, if you live in a condominium with a balcony, then you know that the space is limited and would be able to accommodate things like a porch swing (as wonderful an idea as it sounds). You will have to make do with a few folding chairs or a smaller outdoor set.

Just because you don’t have a large space, does not mean you shouldn’t be able to make it look appealing. You can add pops of color by getting potted plants and flowers to bring a breath of fresh air to your balcony that’s hundreds of feet in the air. Just mind that the plants don’t grow beyond their containers and overwhelm your balcony. This will also be a new and fun hobby: plant care taking.

Protection From the Sun

While enjoying the outdoors, some people often forget to put on UV blocking sunscreen. Sunlight can bring you much needed vitamin D, mood improvement and cheerful times. However, there can be too much of a good thing, as with excess exposure to sunlight and UV rays, you can put yourself at health risk.

You can protect yourself and any guests visiting your outdoor space by covering it with outdoor blinds, also known as  exterior shades. These are a type of solar shades that are graded for outdoor use. Solar fabrics are weaved to allow light to pass through, leaving you a view to the side with more light, but they are weaved in a way that should mute the more harmful effects of the sun and provide you with a layer of protection.

If you are looking to upgrade your home’s curb appeal, doing so with motorized outdoor roller shades can do just that. They are just like the above mentioned solar shades, but with a motor to operate them. People are often looking for the latest and most advanced technology when it comes to house shopping, and by seeing these motorized outdoor shades in your porch or deck or patio, they will know that your house is well taken care of.

Final Thoughts

Imagine sipping on a cold beverage or enjoying a freshly grilled steak while enjoying some fresh air. Now imagine doing that in a place that screams you and is properly protected against overbearing sunlight. That is something you can easily do, and it can be done relatively cheaply as well. It can be a project that you undertake in a single summer or over the course of many, but the goal should be to allow you to maximize your enjoyment of the space.
